Mr. Sage is a 1978 graduate of Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts where he received a Bachelor of Science [With High Distinction] [4.0GPA] in civil engineering, majoring in structural and geotechnical engineering. He also holds a Master of Architecture [3.8GPA] from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where he majored in building design and taught structures as a teaching assistant from 1978 to 1981. He is an honorary alumnus of Assumption College, also in Worcester, Massachusetts. His 27 years of professional experience in New York City have enabled him to obtain diversified experience in a combination of roles as Architect and Builder. He has been involved with the following building types: historic landmark buildings; hospitals; health/clinics; building rehabilitation and new construction for both residential and commercial use; mass transit train station improvements; theater and church renovation; new churches; fire houses; schools; summer resorts; gymnasiums, swimming pool houses, and custom homes.
Joseph A. Sage is a Vietnam Era Veteran (1972-1975). During his Army military service he was a construction draftsman/designer and M60 Machine Gunner attached to the 76th Heavy Combat Engineers. He was also a carpenter by trade. Joseph had designed and in 1983 built his own family's custom seashore summer cottage on Prince Edward Island, Canada. The wood framed house was closed in within 17 days due to the work being done during his vacation time. Many of the building construction procedures, specifications and materials specified in Joseph's earlier projects were incorporated into the residence. This construction process gave Joseph a first hand involvement with the building process from design, as an Architect, through construction management as a General Contractor and Carpenter. This Master Builder process was instilled upon him early in his career and has set the stage for his development as a true Master Builder today.
While at the Ehrenkrantz Group, P.C. NYC, (1980-1983), Joseph worked as an architectural technician, designer, historic preservationist and project manager. Some of his projects included: CBS Film Editing Library, NYC; MTA Upper Harlem Train Station Improvements, NY; Albany State Capital Building Historic Structures Report, NY; U.S. Navy Combat and Communications Zone Relocatable 500 Bed Hospitals and U.S. Air Force Test Mock-Ups of a Blast Absorbing Structural System.
While at Robert Silman Associates, P.C. NYC (1983-1985), most of Joseph's projects involved working with award-winning architects as both a field and design structural engineer. Some of his projects and architect exposures included: The Fusco House, N.J./Robert Stern, conversion of a turn-of-the-century Richardsonian carriage house to a residence; Ellis Island/Beyer, Blinder, Belle, restoration of the main building, railroad ticket office and power house; Carnegie Hall/James Stewart Polshek and Partners, main stage and recital hall renovation; Ralph Lauren Polo Shop/Naomi Leff and Associates, historic landmark building restoration; Kean House, N.J./Edward Knowles, Governor Kean's cousin's residence; Town Hall Theater/The Ehrenkrantz Group, theater renovation; The Seagram's Building/Pasanella and Klein, roof stabilization and repairs; The Golden House, N.J./Alan Chimacoff, new custom residence; DGS Firehouse, N.Y./Eisenman and Robertson, new building; School House and Old Town Hall, Columbus, Indiana/The Liebman Melting Partnership, structural conditions field survey.
Joseph was a partner of Thomas H. Otto and Associates, Geotechnical Engineers NJ (1985-1986). As principle in charge of the Structural Division, he designed, specified and administered shoring engineering, building foundations, building superstructures, and site work structures. Some of his projects included: Bunnies Store, NYC, underpinning of two hundred feet of adjacent buildings, shoring and sheeting of a seventeen foot deep excavation, providing construction pre-surveys and stabilization of adjacent buildings during pile-driving operations; Monadnock Construction Warehouse, Brooklyn, engineered wood pile and concrete pile cap/grade beam foundation; Union City Shopping Center, N.J., engineered wood pile and concrete pile cap/grade beam foundation; Monroe, N.Y., Hasidic Community Boys School Addition foundation and superstructure.
Mr. Sage owned and operated as president, a construction company, Master Tech Construction (1985-1991) which specialized in shoring, carpentry, millwork and interior restoration and a Design/Build Architectural Firm, The Sage Group (1985-2009).
Now operating one company, JOSEPH A. SAGE ARCHITECT PC (2004-2020), Joseph is practicing as an Architectural/Structural/Historic Conservation and Preservation Consultant to Private Sector Owners and to Architects, Engineers and Builders. Mr. Sage is well known throughout the tri-state area as a leak and crack doctor, specializing in waterproofing, crack forensics, underpinning, shoring and historic preservation of structural systems. Joseph has completed over 50 projects related to historic buildings in New York City Historic Landmark Districts or Landmarked individually and has completed over 1000 projects total under his 3 companies. Joseph has been directly involved in all of them.
